The JCC Fitness Center is Open

Reopening

We are thrilled to welcome you back for a phased reopening of the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan Health Club, starting with the 4th floor Fitness Center, which opened on Monday, September 21. We've missed our community dearly and can’t wait to welcome you back to the building, with your health and safety as our highest priority. Please use this page as a comprehensive guide to reopening protocols and procedures to ensure your member experience is safe and smooth. Check back often for updates.

Workouts will be by advance reservation only. Masks must be worn at all times in the building and in the Fitness Center, and members must adhere to social distancing guidelines, as well as other health and safety protocols outlined herein.

We’re pleased to let you know we have received guidance from the Mayor's office on the reopening of indoor pools. With the newly issued guidelines, we are formulating a timeline for restarting our aquatics operations, and will keep you posted. The gymnasium, showers, steam room, massage services, and on-site group exercise classes also remain on pause until further notice. Limited basketball court access and personal training services are expected to resume soon.

Cleaning and Sanitizing

As the JCC begins a phased re-opening, we have adopted a set of protocols to best prepare the building, staff and members in response to COVID-19. The following guidelines address the cleaning, sanitization and disinfection of the facility, and are designed to ensure the health and safety of our staff and patrons. These guidelines are informed by the recommendations issued to date by governmental and public health authorities, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New York State and City Departments of Health. The Building Maintenance staff will receive all applicable training in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, with respect to reducing the risk and spread of COVID-19.

The following guidelines and more will be maintained:

  • Hospital grade disinfectants and proven methodology will be used to sanitize the building.
  • Hand sanitizer dispensers and disinfectant wipes will be visible throughout the building. The dispensers will be monitored throughout the day to ensure they are fully stocked and available for all visitors and guests
  • All HVAC vents have been cleaned/filters changed as recommended by ASHRAE
  • Masks and gloves will be used by all building maintenance staff
  • Walls, rails, interior and exterior panels & buttons of our elevators will be cleaned every 30 min
  • Stairway rails, door handles, and push bars will be cleaned four times a day

The following will occur in the Fitness Center:

  • Hand sanitizer and wipe station stock will be checked continuously
  • All high-touch areas (e.g. door handles, weights) will be sanitized between sessions

Air Quality

We are following all CDC guidelines with respect to air quality in our building as we respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. A key method to reducing the spread of the virus is to bring more outside air into the building. Bringing fresh air into the facility and flushing the existing air out prevents particles that carry the virus from lingering in the air and settling in the building. Therefore, our new air handling guidelines include:

  • Increased ventilation rates in all public spaces
  • Increased percentage of outdoor air that circulates into the system to its maximum
  • As we have repaired and replaced VAV and VFD controllers to allow for better situation flexibility in building.

In order to achieve these new standards, we have made the following changes to our air handling systems:

  • Increased the rating of our building’s air filtration system
  • Upgraded to MERV 13 air filters in all major air handlers
  • Maintain system controls to control relative humidity below 60%.
  • Installed UV disinfection in all major handlers
  • Purchased portable UV disinfection machines that will be used on the 4th floor and to disinfect entire nursery rooms.
  • Purchased standalone HEPA filtration units for high traffic or risk areas.
