NEW: JCC Health Club Updates

June 22, 2021

We’re excited to be writing with an update on JCC Health Club protocols in light of Governor Cuomo’s recent announcement confirming the ‘reopening’ of New York State. We are encouraged by the steady climb in vaccination rates in our neighborhood and city, and the greater safety, comfort, and freedoms we can now embrace.

JCC Health Club, Pool, and Basketball members will no longer be required to complete a health declaration, and temperatures will no longer be checked upon entry. Additionally:

Faster Entry

  • You’ll continue to enter through the 76th Street door and bring your JCC ID or any valid photo ID to show to Security.
  • Fitness Center: After booking your workout, you’ll be able to bypass the lobby stop and proceed straight to the Fitness Center. You’ll check in at the 4th floor welcome desk and show your vaccination card if you wish to unmask.
  • Pool: Members will stop in the lobby for a brief check-in where you can show your New York State Excelsior Pass or vaccination card before heading directly to the locker rooms up to 20 minutes before your swimSwim sessions will continue to be 45 minutes to ensure optimal capacity and serve the greatest number of members.

Fitness Updates

  • Fitness Center hours have been extended to 10 pm on weekdays and 9 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Health Club members are welcome to resume an unlimited number of Fitness Center visits, including drop-in visits, and can make a pool reservation on the same day as a fitness workout, if desired, through the JCC MindBody page/app
  • Closures for deep cleaning have been eliminated, so there is no limit to the duration of your workout.

Aquatics Updates

  • Health Club and Pool members may book four swims per week.
  • Pool capacity has been increased to 20 swimmers in most sessions.
  • Closures for deep cleaning have been eliminated and four new swim sessions will be added starting Sunday.
  • Swimmers will be allowed to enter the locker rooms up to 20 minutes before your reservation, if desired, though we ask that you please arrive on the pool deck as close to your swim time as possible.
  • Note: From now through August 12, daytime capacities reflect camp pool use of lanes four and five between the hours of 9 am and 3 pm.

Additional Reopenings

  • Basketball in the 3rd Floor Gymnasium is now open for weekday afternoon and evening reservations. Check-in will take place on the 3rd Floor.
  • In-person group exercise classes will continue to be introduced onsite through the summer and fall. Virtual group exercise classes will also remain part of our Health Club schedule.
  • Locker rooms are open for member use including cubbies, showers, and hair dryers. Wipes are available for the cleaning of surfaces before and after use, for everyone’s benefit.
  • Towel service will resume Thu, July 1. Please help us conserve by using one towel per person.
  • Locker rental will resume Mon, July 5 without personal laundry service. Please email personalservice@mmjccm.org if you are interested in locker rental.
  • And more to come!

Mask Policy Reminder

JCC members who have been vaccinated, and can show proof of vaccination, are not required to wear masks within the Health Club. Proof of vaccination can be shown at any Health Club desk by displaying your vaccination card or the New York State Excelsior pass. Unvaccinated individuals must continue wearing a mask and practice social distancing per CDC guidelines.

Day Camp and Community Covenant

On Tuesday, June 22, we began the joyful tradition of welcoming children into the building for the start of Day Camp @ the JCC, a particularly sweet milestone this year. As we wrote to you when we changed our mask policy, we believe everyone carries a responsibility for the health of our community. As a building that serves both adults and children of all ages, for the time being we ask that vaccinated individuals continue to wear masks in certain shared spaces, including the building entry, lobby, elevators, and locker rooms, where it’s difficult to maintain social distance, and where children will be present. If you’re not vaccinated, we ask for your commitment to continue wearing a mask. At this time, the JCC Health Club Staff will also continue to wear masks, regardless of vaccination status.

More In Store

We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we begin phasing out restrictions. We are keeping closely attuned to the NYC public health landscape and working tirelessly to ensure responsible implementation of changes. Your cooperation with JCC health and safety protocols has helped us reach this wonderful milestone, and will ensure smooth transitions to future phases.

For assistance with Fitness or Pool reservations, email personalservice@mmjccm.org. If you have questions about your membership account, please email membership@mmjccm.org. We are grateful for your loyalty and look forward to seeing you more often.

Air Quality

We are following all CDC guidelines with respect to air quality in our building as we respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. A key method to reducing the spread of the virus is to bring more outside air into the building. Bringing fresh air into the facility and flushing the existing air out prevents particles that carry the virus from lingering in the air and settling in the building. Therefore, our new air handling guidelines include:

  • Increased ventilation rates in all public spaces
  • Increased percentage of outdoor air that circulates into the system to its maximum
  • As we have repaired and replaced VAV and VFD controllers to allow for better situation flexibility in building.

In order to achieve these new standards, we have made the following changes to our air handling systems:

  • Increased the rating of our building’s air filtration system
  • Upgraded to MERV 13 air filters in all major air handlers
  • Maintain system controls to control relative humidity below 60%.
  • Installed UV disinfection in all major handlers
  • Purchased portable UV disinfection machines that will be used on the 4th floor and to disinfect entire nursery rooms.
  • Purchased standalone HEPA filtration units for high traffic or risk areas.

Capacity

Starting Sunday, June 20, we will allow 4 swimmers per lane or total pool capacity of 20 swimmers per cohort (except during private swim and camp hours). Swim sessions will follow standard “circle-swim” lap swimming protocol with signs designating lanes by speeds (fast, medium/fast, medium/slow, slow, slow/walk/multi-task) to ensure both swim etiquette and social distancing can be maintained. Please be advised that a lifeguard may ask you to move to a different lane and we appreciate your prompt cooperation. We also ask you to do your best to ensure only one person is resting on a wall at one time. When resting, members should be mindful of lap swimmers around them, and be sure to adjust for incoming swimmers as needed. Swimmers, we appreciate your patience and dedication to making this work everyone. Thank you for your cooperation during this transitional time.

Please note:

  • We have consulted with our team of health and safety experts, and adapted our operations to ensure all guidelines set forth by governing bodies, including the CDC, are upheld.

TESTIMONIALS

"I have gotten 3 swim experiences so far. I am getting used to the protocol. But I am enjoying it so much. I just had my first circle swim experience and the staff was so helpful and made me feel safe. I am still new to circle swim etiquette and I think I was maybe too fast for my lane, but the guards were great about moving people around for a better swim!"

--Elaheh N.

"I had my free swim trial the other day and really enjoyed it. It was my first swim in almost a year and a half but I was able to swim the full 45 minutes which I was excited about. Demesha helped me get online on the right time and sign up for next week. Thank you so much for calling me personally, this makes a huge difference and I appreciate it so much!"

--Lee L.

"I think the JCC is doing a terrific job keeping the pool open and I appreciate how pleasant and helpful all the staff is during this time. From the moment I enter downstairs and check with the security team to the pool staff on 6, everyone seems to be on the same page and eager to help. Well done."

--Mary M.

"It can’t be left unsaid, and I hope I am not the first to say it.  I am sure I am not.  The job you and your entire team, from front (side) door all the way up to the 4th, 5th, and 6th floors, is just beyond anyone’s wildest imagination for health, safety, well-being, and good cheer.  These are impossible times.  I assume your staff, like so many others, face enormous struggles and are dealing with every kind of imaginable stress. Yet everyone of them — everyone one of them, in every kind of job — greets us and treats as if it were their birthdays, and ours.  If you could bottle the JCCs high spirits and good feelings  and sell them, the JCC’s pandemic-era money troubles would be over, forever.

"It’s our favorite place to be.  It always was, but because for the time being there aren’t many if any other places we can be with other people the way we are with them at the JCC, now more than ever.

"Thank you and your entire staff."

--Jim G and Jenny M.

"Just wanted to say thanks for how well the opening and running of the pool has been.  The plan is good, and the staff has managed the day to day extremely well.  Being able to use the pool in these difficult times is a bright spot for me."

-- Mark M.

"The generosity of Elana, Caitlyn and Davinia reminded me how fortunate I am to get to swim at the MMJCCM.  I was consoled by the real demonstration of humanity and understanding. I want you to know that each of the women on the pool deck made a real contribution by the way they did their jobs. Thank you."

-- Amy A.

"Jane and I will certainly stick with JCC through thick and thin. We had a refreshing restorative swim yesterday morning."

-- Peter S.

"The reopening of the pool has been a tremendous gift, and I'm grateful for that. And your staff has been just terrific -- careful, welcoming and deeply well organized."

"Yesterday we headed over to the JCC for our first workout at the fitness center since the pandemic hit. We were among the New Yorkers who were being extremely careful about going out, possibly overly careful but due to our age (both over 60) and some underlying health issues, we felt it was better to take extra care. We did have a little trepidation about going to the JCC but hoped that the guidelines that were being followed and the precautions that were being put in place would ease our minds. While we'd been working out in our apartment we were so eager to get back to the gym!

"Well, it turns out our expectations were completely exceeded! From the moment we entered the side door and headed up to the fitness center, we were made to feel safe and secure and so warmly welcomed by every staff member we encountered. Major kudos to all! What a wonderful job you have all done. We will definitely be back soon!

"Please give our thanks to the rest of the staff as well. We are so appreciative."

"Part of the joy and relief in the experience of all of us seeing each other again at the JCC echoes what those of us who lived through NYC in the days post 9/11 remember. Enormous gratitude to see the people who walk along the edges of our lives step back into them, whole. We have all lost people, lost touch, and lost our sense of security during these last several months. There are people we will never see again, and have no way to know why. Did they move away? Did they retreat from some activities? Did they die?

"To see each one of you -- each one of US -- that beautiful word -- grounds us in the community that all of you at JCC have so vigorously fought to keep, expand and elevate. We are so grateful."

"There are so many things I love about the JCC. One is the diversity of the community, starting with age diversity. In the pool and men’s locker room (I am only qualified to speak about the men’s), there are people so young they need help putting on their diapers and people so old they sometimes need help putting on their pants. Although much closer in age to the latter than the former, l am still able to get my own pants on and even to help some of the people older than me with theirs.

"Anyway, just some thoughts, but I really just wanted to say thank you to the entire JCC staff. We know how much vision, dedication, and just plain sweat it has taken to get the JCC where it is today. We’ve each visited a half dozen times since the reopening. What you have done is remarkable. And we are enormously grateful."
