XCLD: The Story of Cancel Culture
Dir. Ferne Pearlstein
(US, 2024)
Cancel Culture grew out of a mostly progressive move to hold people accountable for bad behavior, especially bigotry, misogyny, and homophobia. More recently, it has been co-opted by the right, even as conservatives bemoan “wokeism.” But is Cancel Culture really new? Or really that powerful? Executive Produced by Trevor Noah and directed by Ferne Pearlstein, XCLD speaks to comedians like Judy Gold and Marc Maron, academics like Loretta J. Ross, Raul Perez, and other thought leaders in a nuanced look at this provocative and controversial subject. The film explores the evolution of Cancel Culture, from its history in different forms to its contemporary genesis on Black Twitter, to where it is today: another divisive issue for people to argue about. Using director Ferne Pearlstein’s signature humor, pathos, and insight, XCLD is sure to prompt impassioned conversation about some of the most hot-button topics of the day.
