The Carole Zabar Center for Film is offering exclusive access to watch The Spoils virtually between April 6 – April 14!

Ownership, history, and morality collide in this powerful exploration of the ongoing crisis surrounding the restitution of Nazi-looted art. At the center of the film is the case of Max Stern, a German Jewish art dealer who escaped to Canada in 1937 after he was forced by the Nazis to liquidate his gallery. The Spoils offers a gripping, poignant insight into the complex moral and legal dilemmas that continue to shape the art world today.

Join us for a live Zoom Q+A on Tuesday, April 14, at 1 pm ET with director Jamie Kastner and cultural property lawyer Ray Dowd. Moderated by Richard Salomon, one of the co-founders of the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center. Ticketholders will receive a Zoom link in advance.

Presented as part of Saviors on the Screen, an annual series featuring films honoring heroic tales of the Holocaust in honor of Yom HaShoah.

A Night with Chef Hillary Sterling

Join us for a vibrant evening with acclaimed chef and four-time James Beard Award nominee Hillary Sterling as she celebrates the release of her long-awaited debut cookbook, Ammazza!

A love letter to a life in food, Ammazza! brings together over 100 seasonal recipes shaped by Sterling’s journey, from her Brooklyn upbringing in a spirited, food-centered Jewish household to her deep connection with Italian cuisine, and her rise through some of New York’s most celebrated kitchens. Now at the helm of Ci Siamo, she has earned widespread praise for cooking that is both technically precise and deeply soulful.

A portrait of a male dancer in drag from the film 'Ballerina Boys.' He is dressed as a swan with a jeweled headdress and dramatic stage makeup, looking over his shoulder with a poised expression against a shimmering purple backdrop.
Film | Ballerina Boys

Ballerina Boys is a portrait of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (The Trocks), an all-male ballet company known worldwide for blending classical technique with comedy and satire. For over 50 years, they’ve performed en pointe and in drag, challenging ballet’s rigid gender norms and championing equality, inclusion, and social justice. Inspired by the 1969 Stonewall Riots, their work reflects the defiant, creative spirit of the gay rights movement.

Dir. Martie Barylick, Chana Gazit

She has her hands clasped in front of her with a concerned or attentive expression. The background is a softly blurred indoor space featuring a colorful wall covered in various posters and signs, with a few out-of-focus figures walking in the distance.
Film | The Floaters

THE FLOATERS follows struggling musician Nomi, who accepts a last-resort job from her overachiever best friend Mara: mentoring misfit campers, the “Floaters,” at their childhood Jewish summer camp.
