The Memory Project

Welcome to The Memory Project

The Memory Project, curated by the Wechsler Center for Modern Aging at the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan, offers invaluable support and engagement for individuals experiencing mild to moderate memory loss and their dedicated caregivers. Our programs are designed to break the barriers of isolation, fostering a sense of community and offering essential support to all participants.

What We Offer:

     Simultaneous Communities

  • Participant Community: Tailored for individuals facing mild to moderate memory loss, our movement-led sessions encompass music, dance, art, and collaborative cognitive activities. Join us in an active, supportive environment while the Caregiver Community meets at the same time.
  • Caregiver Community: Led by experienced social workers, this gathering is dedicated to sharing experiences, enhancing coping skills, and providing crucial information on community resources for caregivers of individuals experiencing cognitive decline.

These in-person sessions take place weekly; view and register for upcoming dates.

     The Memory Café

  • A supplementary space and session that complements the Participant Community, offering engaging activities for individuals and families managing memory loss. Professionals in music and movement foster connections through engaging, supervised sessions. Caregivers are given the chance to actively participate or take a break from caregiving for errands or self-care, knowing their loved one is in a safe environment.

The Memory Café occurs bi-monthly; view and register for upcoming dates

Unique Features:

  • Holistic Approach: Unlike many programs, we focus on both individuals experiencing memory loss and their caregivers.
  • Expert Guidance: Our trained facilitators help caregivers navigate daily challenges and introduce problem-solving techniques.
  • Respite Care: The Memory Café offers a valuable respite for caregivers, allowing them time for self-care while their loved ones engage in activities in a secure environment.
  • Geriatrician Partnership: Mount Sinai geriatricians provide training and ongoing support to both staff and program participants.

Registration for all Memory Project programs is now open.

We understand the challenges caregivers face in looking after someone with memory loss. The Memory Project aims to ease this burden by supporting those with memory loss and their caregivers in a normalized, intergenerational, communal environment.  To speak with someone further about The Memory Project, please contact Judy Margolis at jmargolis@mmjccm.org or 646.505.4398.

Testimonials

"It is commendable that the JCC is expanding its programming to address the ever-expanding issue of memory loss, a challenge that confronts families throughout the country."

- Caregiver

"I have been improvising these kinds of moves and it has helped getting me clearer and in better spirits. Thank you so much."

- Memory Loss Participant

"I can only say that my wife leaves each session a little happier than when the session began. Concurrent  support for caregivers is a “first” as far as I know."
